Pendennis Shipyard, Falmouth

HOP carried out the preliminary scheme design for Pendennis Shipyard in 2012. Since then, Knights Brown Construction Ltd won the Design & Build contract to construct a new wet dock and appointed HOP as their designer. HOP worked alongside them to deliver the detailed design in line with the construction programme.

The project has involved the construction of a new wet basin adjacent to an existing dry dock and boat sheds in Falmouth docks, including a new travel hoist jetty, lock gate structure and 230m of breakwater.

HOP’s design included an unconventional hollow gate structure weighing 350 tonnes that was cast on land and floated into position, before being sunk and filled with concrete. This enabled the project team to accelerate the construction programme. HOP added value to this project by extensively using precast elements, developing diver-less temporary works systems and by using BIM.
